What is Trauma?
Trauma is a threatening event during which you may feel like you’re about to die or experience serious harm. Examples include assault, rape, accidents, terrorist attacks, fire, disaster and witnessing someone being badly injured or killed.
In the case of more complex trauma, it can be more worryingly experienced as a ‘threatened life’. The symptoms of any trauma can have a significant impact on your day-to-day life.
Trauma in the UK is now a major mental health concern. In most cases, the symptoms develop during the first month after a traumatic event. In some cases, there may be a delay of months or even years before symptoms start to appear. Some people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experience long periods when their symptoms are less noticeable, followed by periods where they get worse. Other people have constant severe symptoms.
Common Signs of Trauma
Constant negative thoughts
Feelings of guilt or shame
Feeling ‘on edge’
Anger and Irritability
Thinking about suicide and death
Insecure social attachment
